Bird watching at the Mouth of Rio Velez, Maro and La Caleta Harbour (Costa del Sol, malaga, Andalucia, Southern Spain)

Another great day with my friend Quirri exploring his birding patch.

Photo: Isabelline Warbler (Iduna opaca)

Have a look at many more pictures and the complete list of 54 species observed below!

With an early morning bird like Quirri, chances are high for nightingales, and we really enjoyed five or six of them at the river on our way to the mouth before dawn.

Once at the mouth, a huge flock of Bee-eaters got up from their roost and the typical birds of the area showed up: Cattle Egrets still resting on the trees, Cetti’s and Reed Warblers, Nightingales, lots of Spotted Flycatchers at this time of year, Zitting Cisticola, Penduline Tits, Kingfisher, Purple Swamphen and Isabelline Warblers.

There were many seagulls at the beach: Audouin’s, Yellow-legged, Mediterranean, Black-headed and the first Lesser Black-baked Gulls. We could also spot Balearic and Scopoli’s Shearwaters in flight over the sea.

We moved on to Maro in search for the White-rumped Swift but we did not success. Anyway, there were lots of Common, Pallid and even a few Alpine ones over there. A Short-toed Snake Eagle was flying over the ridges.

La Caleta Harbour was very quiet and the fishing boats that arrived did not bring many seabirds with them.

You can also live these experiences with us !!!
