100+ Birds Malaga Birding Tour (Costa del Sol, Andalucia, Southern Spain)

The forecast of a very cold wave led us to design a more relaxed and shorter itinerary that produced a list of 82 species observed this month.

Have a look at the pictures and the complete list of birds below!

We started our tour at Montes de Malaga, as always, though a bit later than usual. This time, my friend John put his expert eyes at work with mine. Coming from England, he very much enjoyed our good views of the Crested Tits.

Our next step was going to El Torcal. Even though the temperature was 0ºC, there were some birds at work and we spotted Dartford and Sardinian Warblers, Thekla Lark and Griffon Vulture among others.

The new itinerary implied driving back to Malaga instead of the farmlands, so we headed to Zapata, where we had lunch in the car waiting for the Bluethroat, of which we had two glimpses. But the star of this ambush was a couple of Penduline Tits that kept pecking the plumes of the reeds for a while. Other findings there were Booted Eagle, Cetti’s Warbler, Common Waxbill, Zitting Cisticola and Hoopoe.

Our visit to the Mouth of the Guadalhorce gave Cattle Egret, Greater Flamingo and Spoonbill before we got to the beach. There was plenty of Sandwich Terns in a heavy sea; further away, the Gannets did spectacular dives. A great Skua came out flying the waves as a real seabird and we saw Sanderlings and Kentish Plovers at the beach.

So strong was our willing to find birds at the beach, that we decided to go across it to the Laguna Grande, but the waves were so big that one of them caught us against the fence of the reserve in the coldest day of the year... With our feet soaking wet, we just stop at the Laguna Grande hide for a quick look that left Black-necked Grebes, a Mediterranean Gull and most of the typical waterfowl, before we went back home for a hot shower.
