The Costa del Sol is a sun-and-beach world class tourist destination... and the right place to enjoy your birdwatching holidays abroad!
As a global tourist destination, the Costa del Sol (Malaga, Andalucia, Southern Spain) is linked to the rest of the world through its international airport and provides the visitor with a complete accommodation offer ranging from high luxury to very affordable hotels and apartments placed on the coastal line (Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Nerja...) or the attractive city of Malaga with its wide cultural and gastronomic possibilities. In the quiet towns and villages at the countryside, you can find any kind of comfortable hotels, hostels and villas to stay as well.
What about birding? The province of Malaga hosts a very rich set of different and well protected natural environments: coastal and inland wetlands, river valleys, conifer and Mediterranean forests, Mediterranean scrubland, medium and subalpine height mountains and farmlands. All these sites can be easily accessed by road and are within a one hour drive range from any location on the coast.
The result of all this natural variety is a big number of typically Mediterranean bird species that cannot be watched in Central and Northern Europe or the British Isles. Furthermore, the region is in the middle of the flyway to and from The Strait of Gibraltar, which might produce any pleasant “surprise” during the autumn and spring passage periods.
What, moreover, is to be said about the weather... Placed at the southernmost region of Europe, Malaga province enjoys the highest possible number of sunny days not only in summer, but all year long including our mild winters. Even July and August, the hottest months, will give you the chance for “early morning” trips that will allow good observations of our most special breeding birds.
Good birding on the Costa del Sol!!!

Please, wear appropriate shoes and clothing according to the season, and remember: the countryside is colder than the coast!
