September sojourn on board Island Sky: Part 2 - Coast of Portugal

If Cory’s Shearwaters compete for the majesty prize, Great Shearwaters have indeed won the friendliness prize for their proximity to the ship.

We found the first Balearic Shearwaters while arriving to Porto along with Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Gannets and Cory’s Shearwaters.

Near Lisbon, before dawn, there were lots of seagulls following the ship. There were Sandwich Terns and Mediterranean Gulls in the harbour.

Our arrival to Portimao was spectacular, with hundreds of seagulls flying around the vessel, as if it was a fishing boat. Most of the birds were juveniles among which I think there were some Great Black-backed Gulls. But the most beautiful birds were the Great Shearwaters flying with the ship. They are lifers for me! We could also spot Cory’s Shearwaters and Great Skuas.

There are still some White Storks in Portimao Harbour.

We visited the Alvor River Estuary were, among others, we spotted Azure-winged Magpie, Whimbrel, Red-rumped Swallow, Cattle Egret, Whinchat, Iberian Grey Shrike, Crested Lark, Greater Flamingo, Spoonbill, Black-tailed Godwit, Black-winged Stilts, Grey Plover and a beautiful flock of Oystercatchers.
