July Southern European Sojourn on board Island Sky – Part 3: Northern Spanish coast (2017.07.10-11)

Galicia and the Bay of Biscay was my last chance for a species I had been trying hard to find...

Have a look at the tour report and pictures below!

This last part of the tour went from La Coruña to Bilbao.

My last time in La Coruña was with my school mates in summer 1983. I came back to the Torre (tower) the Hercules lighthouse, the oldest in the world! (built by the Romans during the I st century) with my most loyal birdwatchers to watch Yellow-legged Gulls and Shags, but also Magpies, Blackbirds, Spotless Starlings, House Sparrows, Black Redstarts and lots of Stonechats, including adorable chicks all around the area.

Lots of Common Dolphins welcomed the arrival of the ship to the Bay of Biscay in a very quiet sea.

I had not been to Bilbao since I was a child either. I found an attractive vigorous city that knew how to face its serious challenges with big and necessary changes, and it was the end of our wonderful tour.

Yes, I could not spot the Storm Petrels. There is always a reason to come back... in September!
