July Southern European Sojourn on board Island Sky – Part 2: Portugal (2017.07.07-09)

How fantastic is watching the majestic Cory’s Shearwaters and the Gannets following the ship!

Have a look at the tour report and pictures below!

This part of the tour took place in Portimao, Lisbon and Leixoes (Porto).

There were plenty of fishing boats on the way to Portimao, so we did not see many seabirds before arriving to the port, but the first Balearic Shearwaters showed up. It was very nice to see the White Storks nesting in the city.

Lisbon’s gorgeousness from the estuary turns into melancholy when you walk the streets of the old Alfama quarter. But we did good urban birding with Serin, Yellow-legged Gulls, Pallid Swifts and Black Redstart. The Tagus estuary is the only place where we spotted Mediterranean Gulls.

The journey to Leixoes (Porto) left a fantastic flock of 20+ Gannets following the trail of the ship for more than half an hour. Some guests reported to me that they saw the same phenomena during the night from their cabins. Just amongst the Gannets, I spotted what I think was a young Great Black-backed Gull, but I cannot be sure.
